Publication: Tamil Weekly 'Kumudam' - Date: March 25th 2002
The below article is a translation of an interview given by producer P.L.Thenappan to the Tamil weekly Kumudam which was published on 25.03.02 As a bar-attender in a wine shop As a peon in a bank As a sub-editor in a weekly As an assistant in a pharmacy As an office boy As a production manager. These are the various jobs held by P.L.Thenappan before he became a film producer. He is very close to Rajinikanth and Kamalhassan. Read the success story of Thenappan who is just about 32-years. My father was working in a textiles factory in Kerala as an electrician that was next to the house of actor Jayaram. When the factory shut down, my father went to Madras to work in the office of Director Ramanarayanan. He was not able to send us money home after tending to his expenses. That's when a 'Manick Said' an acquaintance arranged for a job for me after 4 pm in a wine shop after school hours. I used to earn Rs.125 per month for a job from 4 to 12 in the midnight. Through 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th standard I was working in a wine shop and attending school as well. It did hurt a lot when other kids in the school made fun of me for working in a wine shop. Then I started to rent cassettes which I used to get for Rs3.50 for rent for Rs.5. I started earning around Rs.20 per day. Though I was born in Karaikudi and a Tamilian birth I studied in Malayalam medium. I knew neither English, Hindi nor Tamil. As for Tamil, I knew only to speak Tamil as it was my mother tongue. But now I have managed to produce quite a number of Tamil films. After finishing my 10th standard I wanted to do my Diploma in Polytechnic and join my father as an electrician but that did not happen. I accompanied by maternal Uncle who worked in a bank in Madras. I joined the bank as a peon but soon I was asked to quit as the union objected to temporary staff. Then I worked in the medical shop owned by the father of Mr.Ramanarayanan for seven months for Rs.300 that was for prolonged strenuous hours. Finally I went back to Kerala and worked in Mangalore in an estate owned by a relative for Rs.300 per month that barely sufficed my daily expenses. Finally I came back to Madras and worked as a cashier in Mr.Rama.Narayanan's office when I got the opportunity to work as a manager in 'Karakattakaran' and 'Raja Raja Thaan'. In those days when K.S.Ravikumar was an assistant director we used to roam together to move ahead in life. In between all this I also got to be an office boy supplying tea and coffee following which I had the opportunity of being a sub-editor of a Tamil weekly called 'Tamilnadu Entertainment'. K.S.Ravikumar got the opportunity to work in a R.B.Choudhary production called 'Puriyadha Pudhir' during which he introduced me to R.B.Choudhary. While I was working as a Production Executive for Super Good Films, Kamal Hassan agreed to do the guest role in the film 'Kadhala Kadhala' in which I was the producer. Later on Superstar Rajinikanth called me to assist him in his film 'Padiyappa' which not only got me the name but I earned his trust of too. The Almighty has blessed me abundantly financially and brought me out of all difficulties. Today Kamal Hassan trusts me to the point that he wouldn't believe anybody even if they were to talk anything ill about me. I have named my daughter Rajalakshmi, Kamal Hassan's mother's name is also Rajalakshmi. Remembering the man who helped me build my life I have named my daughter so. Basically I believe if one believes in hardwork they can come up in life. If you believe that God is waiting to shower his abundance on you He certainly will.
